Explore Exmouth

What Makes Exmouth Such A Great Destination?

Well, the variety of things to see and do is an obvious answer. For beachcombers and nature lovers, there are two miles of sandy beach to explore, not to mention the stunning Jurassic coast itself – along which the rocks themselves tell the story of 185 million years of the Earth’s history. If you are coming with kids, show them the brilliant video below to whet their appetite.

There are watersports aplenty including scuba diving, kayaking and kite surfing and for the less h2o oriented there are wonderful hiking and cycling paths along the Exe estuary and beyond.  The town of Exmouth offers indoor as well as outdoor bowling facilities, prestigious golf clubs, and a number of alternative sports clubs.

Birdwatchers would enjoy a boat trip along the River Exe with full commentary on the sightings of thousands of migratory birds.  The cruise lasts approximately 3 hours and can be arranged through the Hotel.  During the summer months a ferry takes you across from Exmouth to Starcross for visits to the historic Powderham Castle, Teignmouth, Dawlish and other places of interest.  There are plenty of wildlife viewing opportunities with bird watching, visits to Exmouth’s local Nature Reserve which is an enormous area of tidal sand and mud which becomes the home to thousands of migratory birds from the freezing Arctic for Devon’s warmer winter months.  The spectacle of watching these far travelled birds feeding on the estuary is well worth experiencing.  East Devon is host to ancient woodland, tumbling rivers, the Jurassic Coast and all the history that displays and miles and wonderful foot paths and cycle routes.

For the adventurous, Exmouth makes a great hub with train, bus and ferry transport all within walking distance of the town centre, the beach and Manor Hotel. Exeter International Airport is a mere 30 minutes away with transfers by taxi or public transport easily arranged.  The busy sea side town of Exmouth offers a wide variety of day trips and provides the perfect home base for exploring the greater Devon area.

Exmouth Entertainment and Festivals

Throughout the year, Exmouth hosts events and activities that are fun for the whole family including the Exmouth Festival in late Spring. This free music festival offers entertainment, food and drink, arts and crafts and children activities and draws visitors from across the country. The entire town is engulfed in these festivities with events popping up at many different locations throughout the day and evening.  Stilt walkers and musicians entertain the crowds of visitors to the town with food and drink stalls and vans offering a huge variety of delicious freshly prepared delicacies.

The diversity of what’s on in Exmouth throughout the year is what brings the crowds of visitors to our shores.  Sporting events like kite surfing festival brings the active community to the water’s edge whereas the literary festival attracts readers of all ages.  The Devon County Show is a very competitive exhibition of Englands greatest selection of breeds of sheep and cattle.  Throughout the year there are beer festivals, food festivals and even a welly throwing festival for fathers to celebrate Father’s Day.

Hiking trails will encourage you to sample a diverse selection of delicious local foods and ales in the pubs you pass.  All the while the kids can enjoy old fashioned donkey rides on the beach.  This year Exmouth sported it’s very own ‘eye’ observation wheel situated overlooking the beach and which was very busy.  Imagine being able to see as far as up the Exe Estuary, across the entire town of Exmouth, as well as across to Powerham Castle and along the coast all from the comfort of your revolving ride!  There have been many positive remarks made of what a fantastic addition to Exmouth’s attractions the big wheel has made.
