Devon, and in particular the Exe estuary lies top of the list of wonderful places to be birdwatching. Surrounded by mudflats, sandbanks, wood-and farmland, the fertile estuary lends itself perfectly to playing host, and being home to thousands of migratory and local birds.
Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve is on our doorstep with 500 acres of natural beauty waiting to be explored. Access is free and all year round – there is nothing better than setting off with or without a guide and some great binoculars to spot that rare and elusive bird you haven’t yet added to your list. Our relatively frost free weather – although patterns are changing and Exmouth was covered in a blanket of snow in 2018 – encourages migratory birds from Siberia and elsewhere to join us over the winter months. The food offered by the incredible diversity in our Nature reserves and fertile estuary means there is plenty for everyone and we are lucky enough to be on site to enjoy the spectacle. Guided tours can be arranged or bring your own group of enthusiasts for some competitive twitching. Thousands of geese, ducks and waders can be seen resting on their journey and feeding heartily in the marshes and on the mud flats.
We ask all guests and visitors to these important sites to keep noise to a minimum and all dogs on leads. Having the privilege of being on a migratory route and also home to over wintering birds is something we need to preserve. There are educational centres and masses of information on walks and hides, shelters and even boat trips to allow you to view the birds from the comfort of a seat.
Devon has so many options to offer those people who enjoy a day out in the wilderness observing wild life. Parks and reserves are your playground with nothing to stop you from rambling to your hear’s content. Remember to take suitable footwear, a drink, even a picnic to enjoy along with the stunning views on offer and of course binoculars and pen and paper. Although smart phone cameras are amazing quality nowadays, being able to take a high resolution photograph of your special treasure with a good camera is still top prize.
